Campaign of the Month: June 2012
Clear navigation through any weather.
This enchanted sextant allows navigation though even the most overcast, foggy or cloudy night skies. Upon speaking Sigrd’s name and sighting through the scope, any form of concealment is negated. The viewer can clearly see the heavens and other landmarks with ease, despite the prevailing weather. The sextant grants a user who is skilled in nautical navigation a +10 (total) circumstance bonus on Survival checks made to navigate while above ground.
As a side effect to the enchantment, the user may also look through the sextant’s scope to perceive illusions and see all things as they actually are. The user may see through normal and magical darkness, notice secret doors hidden by magic, see the exact locations of creatures or objects under blur or displacement effects, see invisible creatures or objects normally, see through illusions, and see the true form of polymorphed, changed, or transmuted things. Further, the user can alter the sextant to see into the Ethereal Plane (but not into extradimensional spaces).
The viable range of the vision conferred is 120 feet. This limit only applies to the side effect, and not to navigation through the sextant.
This instrument, however, does not penetrate solid objects. It in no way confers X-ray vision or its equivalent. It does, however negate concealment for the viewer, including that caused by fog and the like. The sextant does not help the viewer see through mundane disguises, spot creatures who are simply hiding, or notice secret doors hidden by mundane means. In addition, the spell effects cannot be further enhanced with known magic, so one cannot view through a crystal ball or in conjunction with clairaudience/clairvoyance using this sextant.
Searching through the sextant is a standard action that provokes attacks of opportunity. Additionally, the user suffers a -10 penalty to all Perception checks made regarding anything visual which is not directly in line with the scope.
Requirements Craft Wondrous Item, true seeing; Cost 7,500 gp
A sextant is an instrument used to measure the angle between any two visible objects. Its primary use is to determine the angle between a celestial object and the horizon which is known as the object’s altitude. Making this measurement is known as sighting the object, shooting the object, or taking a sight and it is an essential part of celestial navigation. The angle, and the time when it was measured, can be used to calculate a position line on a nautical chart. Common uses of the sextant include sighting the sun at solar noon and sighting Eliwyn (represented by a cluster of five bright yellow stars representing the five golden fruits, seen throughout the year in the northern sky at night), to find one’s latitude (in northern latitudes). A sextant can also be held horizontally to measure the angle between any two landmarks which allows for calculation of a position on a chart. A sextant can also be used to measure the Lunar distance between the moon(s) and another celestial object (e.g., star, planet) in order to determine the standard time (which is important because it can then be used to determine the longitude).
