The pagoda, cleared of its monstrous occupants, leaves the heroes free to delve into the lower levels without need to protect their backs. The descent is treacherous yet not insurmountable. What they find when they reach the bottom of a great spiral stair, however, is daunting indeed.
In an enormous cavern deep below the forest’s pagoda lies a strong fortress. Its wall spans the distance between floor and ceiling, and wall to wall. A single, spiked door is the only means of egress, save the dozens of narrow arrow slits peopled by more of the oni’s Obake warriors. Defending themselves from the hail of arrows and a rain of hot, burning oil, the Wheel-Breakers handily breach the doors and slay the guardians.
Before they entered, it was clear that several bodies were impaled upon the great spikes on the outer door. The see to saving those unfortunate victims of Munasukaru’s minions; only one such man was to be saved, and even he did not desire life, but the group insisted on getting him to safety. They sent him to the surface, escorted by their two trusty henchmen.
Another battle shortly broke out, as they traversed a pit-strewn room rife will arrow-slits well concealed between horrific sculptures and friezes all along the walls. The made their way down this hall of murder, and thanks to Wikkit’s new bracelet, they were able to breach yet another set of sealed doors, only to discover not only more Obake warriors, but a mean-looking pair of Mugese Giants. Furthermore, it seems the lamp has some other agenda for Kumori, for just as he pushes open the great doors, he transforms into the recognizable smoke associated with the lamp.
Will our heroes be able to defeat the murderous Obake and their giant assistant? Will Kumori’s absence prove fatal for the group? Next session, the heroes will discover if they have mettle enough without their leader…
