Before you stands an older Kaidanese man, his deeply wrinkled, tan skin with salt and pepper hair making him appear older than his actual age of 50. His beard and hair blow freely in the wind. He stands a shade over 6 foot tall, his stance belying resolve. He moves with an easy grace. His gaze never seems to focus, instead his eyes appear to always be looking through the skein of the world around him.
His wiry frame is hidden by bulky clothes. The clothes look to be in poor shape; slightly worn and stained, but a keen eye will notice they have been perfectly tailored and made of durable, well woven cloth. He wears a sealskin backpack, a light crossbow, a dagger on his belt, and carries a wooden walking pole.
A few things seem out of the ordinary, a finely wrought brass ring on his left index finger. A bronze ring etched with blowing wheat on his left ring finger. Upon his brow is a black headband that appears to have been crafted with crow feathers. Occasionally, red leather bracers decorated with oni can be seen upon his forearms.
Born to a minor noble, Banlak was a fourth son. When his 3rd brother (training for earth elemental magic) died, Banlak was chosen to study magic at a Imperial academy for wood elemental magic. The last gift his family gave him before he left was the katana named Takenoko (bamboo shoot). Banlak studied for 4 years before his life took a turn for the worse. His master told him the tale of the cursed Ring of Abu Al Mubarak. Determined he could control the magic of the ring, he foolishly put it on. Banlak has been unable to remove it ever since. An undead noble took interest in the pleasures the ring offered and was determined to make Banlak his servant. Banlak fled on an Imperial junk that evening. A storm set upon the ship and Banlak was swept overboard.
He awoke in the Impossible Palace, learning from a wood elemental master within. One day when he went to study, his master was gone and the only remenant was a small bronze griffin figurine. As soon as he touched the figurine, he found himself floating on the ocean floating upon a rotted ship’s figurehead, a wood nymph statue. Hours later he was picked up by a crew of a pirate ship.
Banlak had to prove his value to the crew, so they would not kill him. He did so by protecting the ship with his magic, but he refused to ever fight against those the ship attacked. One day the ship was attacked by another group of pirates and Banlak fought that day. He killed that ship’s tengu first mate, taking his headband. He traveled with the ship for a few years, before they deemed he had repaid his debt of rescue and was allowed free.
The ship put him ashore at Shindo in Mung Li. He heard stories of Kumori within the Impossible Palace and has been tracking him ever since. He is determined to return home and destroy the undead noble who wanted to enslave him, since Banlak holds him responsible for the loss of the lifestyle he might have had. The Ring of AAM has allowed him to keep only a few valuables stored within, most notably his 2 captured katanas.
Takenoko (bamboo shoot)
Forged for Banlak in recognition of his being selected by an Imperial academy. The sword’s blade is patterened to look like the grain of a bamboo shoot.
Banlak brought the sword with him to his training. He was often singled out for carrying a blade, while the others focused on magic alone. His magical skill was not as great as theirs, but he was often the victor in duels due to his blended style. One of the students he had defeated had been kicked from the school. In retaliation, an assassin had been sent to kill Banlak, but he defeated him alone, thus claiming his first enemy katana. He removed the black walnut handle from the blade and attached it to his own after carefully carving a bamboo forest design upon it. (making Takenoko masterwork)
In the Impossible Palace, a ronin attacked Banlak’s master. Banlak challenged the ronin and defeated him after trapping him in a web, taking his katana and bracers of armor. As payment, the master trained Banlak in an arcane ritual to pull the magic from the ronin’s blade and weave it into Takenoko. (making Takenoko +1)
Shortly after his arrival in Mung Li, Banlak was trapped in a palace run by a powerful illusionist. For weeks, Banlak was unable to escape. He began to meditate and he heard a faint voice whisper to him. The voice came from the bronze griffon statue, telling him to find the heart of the palace and subdue it’s magic. Banlak was able to find his way to a gorgeous garden with a magical fountain in the middle. He determined all the palace’s magic stemmed from the fountain and began unweaving it’s magic. The illusionist came upon Banlak at this point, attacking him. His patience wearing thin, Banlak decapitated the head of the fountain’s statue. The illusion magic was invested into the katana. (making Takenoko glammered)
