Campaign of the Month: June 2012
The town of Witheridge is located in North Central Midrealm, eleven leagues east of Stahl and eight leagues south of Royal Crossing. It rests at the base of The Withered Hills, and originated as an outpost and lookout site. Most notably in history, Witheridge was the location of one of the pivotal battles during the War of the Standard, where a stand was made against the seven tribes of orcs. Only remnants of three of those tribes survive.
To this day, it is said that over twenty thousand bodies lay buried in the crypts beneath the Shadow Sacristy, the largest known temple to Mormekar. These were the permanently fallen, those who lost all their gifts during seven year battle. The Ministers of the Sacristy see to the caretaking of the crypts, which are rumored to spread for miles under the earth, surrounding Saragan’s Hill (the bell-shaped mount around and atop which the town sits). The Shadow Sacristy is of temple stature, its size rivaling The Great Church’s Cathedrals in majesty. Unlike the Great Cathedrals, however, services here are rarely held. The Ministers and the Obedient Brotherhood (Mormekar’s holy warrior sect) instead stand vigilant watch over the bodies of the dead.
Lord Bertrand Finesmith leads the town from high atop Saragan’s Mount, in the rather small keep. He has six permanent knights stationed in his keep, and the town itself has 20 men at arms who serve as local guardsmen and town watch. One of the Lord’s Knights, Sir Malcolm Anders serves as town reeve, and is known for his firm-handed justice.
Among the several hundreds of relatively mundane buildings in Witheridge are a small shrine, a Healing Hall of Morwyn, and the Monastery of the Lion, a spiritual retreat which also serves as a known chapter house for the knightly Order of the Rose and Cross.
